It’s a bundle package that you subscribe to and pay for on a regular basis, a little like pet insurance, but different. You may have thought about a preventative care plan, but is right for you and your pet? This article will explain what a preventative care plan is, what the benefits are and how it differs to pet insurance. We will answer all the questions you may have about preventative care plans and how to join the club!
What is a Preventative Care Plan?
So what exactly is a preventative care plan? This is a subscription, or membership if you like, that allows you to pay an affordable monthly fee to cover the cost of the care for your pet. This can include blood tests, checkups, vaccines, dental work and deworming, plus so much more. These are also referred to as monthly wellness plans and they can be tailored to your pets specific needs. Here at FetchMyVet, we offer a monthly wellness plan (or preventative care plan) called fetchClub. The fetchClub has three different packages to choose from. The basic plan, the prime plan, and the VIP plan. We also have a junior plan available too, for adorable little pups! Our experienced veterinarians will help you find the right plan for you. If you have a breed of dog or cat that is more prone to illness and may require more medical care throughout their life, the VIP plan may be the best option for you. This includes everything in our fetchClub, including regular consultations and 15% discount on other services that you may require that does not come with the fetchClub plan, or that you may need in addition to the quota supplied in the plan.
A preventative care plan can be purchased at any time and will generally work on an annual basis. For example, if you were to purchase our prime plan, then annually you would get 2 nail trims, 2 telemedicine consultations and 3 in-home visits and examinations (as well as many other treatments). A lot of the services that make up the pet plan are there to prevent illnesses and detect any problems before they become a health issue. Spreading the cost of pet care will save you money and detecting illnesses before they require further treatment will prevent further medical bills. Things like blood tests and screenings are a fantastic way to make sure your pooch is healthy and not harboring any horrible diseases, like Heartworm, which often has little symptoms at the start.
What are the Benefits of the Preventative Care Plan?
First of all, you will be safe in the knowledge that your pet is receiving excellent care. If there is anything you are worried about, you can find out through a check as part of your plan and your vet will be able to guide you from there. The beauty of a preventative plan is that you can catch and illnesses and problems before they get worse. Once a problem has been detected, your vet can quickly administer the right medication to get them on the mend, and as the preventative care plan is there to find things early, the treatment is often simple and fast. Your pet will be wonderfully healthy and you will know you have done everything you can to keep them safe and well. With our fetchClub, you can decide what kind of package of care you want, so you can go for a cheaper plan if you don’t think you need the full works. You can pay off your pet’s medical bills monthly, and if you need any more services, you can add this to your monthly plan, to help you spread out the cost. Knowing that your main veterinary checkups are covered in manageable installments is a stress-free way to ensure your pooch is getting the best possible care. It is really easy to add services to your plan too, so you can tailor it to your dog’s need. This is also the same for any unpredictable services your pooch may need, you just need to pay it off in your monthly installments, rather than straight after your vet’s visit.
What’s Included in a Preventative Care Plan?
Each plan is different and it all depends on your pet’s needs. A VIP package will include an in-home visit and exam, telemedicine consultations, core vaccines, deworming, fecal profile, screenings, complete blood panel, urinalysis, ear or skin impression, non-anesthetic dental, nail trims, VIP support center access and discounts on other services. The prime and basic plans include some of these services, and you can add more services to your plan if you need them and pay them off through the year. You may also receive a discount to help you save. Your pet’s health is extremely important, but we understand how expensive vet bills can be, which is why the pet plan works so well for many of our customers and their fur babies. Detecting problems in your fur baby through blood work or a general screening, especially as your four-legged friend grows older, will allow you to act quickly if there are any problems, to avoid drawn-out illnesses or discovering something when it’s sadly too late. Preventative care plans cost anything from $40 - $120 per month, to cover essential care add added checks and veterinary services to ensure your pet’s health is at the top of its game. When you compare this to your annual veterinary bills, you may find this is a better option for you, plus, you will hopefully save your pooch from expensive surgery if an illness has been detected early.
How is it Different to Pet Insurance?
Pet insurance is a wonderful way to ensure you can afford to pay for emergencies and operations on your pet. Some may even refund part of your pet’s checkups, but there are a number of insurance deals and plans out there, all of which offer different things. Insurance prices tend to change yearly and you may often find yourself shopping around for the best policies. As accidents and emergencies are unpredictable, it can be a huge worry if your pet requires expensive surgery and care, which why insurance is a great way to keep your mind at ease if anything were to happen. Insurance can be paid monthly or annually, and it’s important to understand what you are getting for your money.
The pet prevention plan is different, in that you are paying off checkups, routine shots and other medical visits each month to spread the cost of these essential things. This is preventative care, which is more proactive than reactive, which is what your insurance is for. Insurance is something that is there to react to when there is a medical emergency, whereas a pet care plan will help to prevent illness (all though of course, accidents like a broken leg can’t be prevented by these plans, unfortunately). Although pet insurance can feel expensive, especially if you never use it, it is an important safety net to protect you against big veterinary bills. It means you will be able to pay for serious operations that your fur baby may desperately need one day.
Is a Preventative Care Plan Right for You?
It can be difficult to decide what is best; insurance, a preventative pet care plan, or both? In an ideal world, both of these plans and policies will help your pet stay healthy and act as a way to spread your money out instead of having to pay a big lump sum if an accident happens of your pet requires surgery or treatment for an illness. It depends on how you would rather spend your money. Spreading the cost will allow you to keep track and know that your visits, shots, dental care and other veterinary services are paid off as part of your monthly budgeting. If you would rather just pay at the time your pet requires a certain service or treatment, that’s completely your decision; you know what’s best for you. You may find it easier to keep track of what medical care your pet needs and with a plan, you will know exactly what care you can access throughout the year and how much it is going to cost you. Your veterinarian can help you decide whether a pet preventative care plan is right for you, and also which package is most suitable. You don’t have to decide straight away if you want a care plan, you may make this decision down the line when you know what care your pet needs and how often. A pet care plan may make more sense for you and will allow you to rest assured that your vet bills are being covered in monthly installments. With our pet plans, you will receive regular home visits, which you can easily schedule online. This means you don’t have to take your pet anyway, which is great if they are feeling under the weather. With the care plan, you don’t have to worry about paying your veterinarian after the visit too, which will relieve a lot of stress for you, and leave you safe in the knowledge that your fur baby has been thoroughly checked over and given a diagnosis, plus you will have advice as to what to do next.
What Else Do You Need to Know?
When you purchase a pet plan, you can easily cancel at any time. You are simply covering the cost of the services that you need throughout the year. Speak to your veterinarian if you would like to cancel your plan for any reason from it’s not working out for you, to if there is a different plan that might be more suitable. You may have to pay any outstanding balances for services that your pet has received that has not been fully repaid yet. You can add additional services to your plan at any time to help you pay these services off.
You can request to see the same veterinarian for all services required, to keep a more personal experience and allow your pet to get used to the same person coming to visit. Most pets aren’t too keen on vet visits, but if they get to know and trust someone, it can help keep them at ease.
To summarize, a pet preventative care plan is a fantastic way to keep your pooch healthy and stay one step ahead of any nasty illnesses they may develop. You can choose a plan that’s right for you and your four-legged friend, in order to get all the veterinary services they require, like regular shots and dental care. Paying for your care plan in monthly installments will allow you to spread the cost of your veterinary bills, and leave you safe in the knowledge that all your checkups and necessary veterinary services are paid for in your plan. Unlike the reactive nature of pet insurance, a preventative plan does exactly what it says, which is to prevent illness and disease. Speak to your veterinarian about the right preventative care plan for you.
